Ivan Davis

Gregor Benko was co-founder of International Piano Library in 1965.  He brought the organization to New York (where it was renamed "International Piano Archives") and ran it for fifteen years, producing pioneer reissue recordings of historic pianists.  In 1977 he presented the Archives' collections of recordings, scores, manuscripts and other piano-related materials to the University of Maryland at College Park, where they are now the most comprehensive such collection in the world, known as "IPAM."    In the 1970s he was instrumental in arranging for several hours of recordings to be made of the forgotten Hungarian pianist Ervin Nyiregyhazi, whose playing remains controversial.  "It was like unearthing a tomb and finding a breathing mummy," says Benko.  More importantly, he has found and issued every known recording of Josef Hofmann.  He has been working on a biography of Hofmann for many years.  A book he is co-authoring with Rachmaninoff expert Francis Crociata, detailing the relationship between Rachmaninoff and Hofmann, will be finished in a few months.
